Author and mediator Tara West joins host William Corless (MA, MII, ACC) in this episode to discuss The Mediator’s Approach.
Tara West is the author of The Mediator’s Approach: Five (and a Half) Paths Through Conflict and co-author of Self-Determination in Mediation: The Art and Science of Mirrors and Lights. She is a certified transformative mediator and conflict coach who has been trained in facilitative, evaluative, understanding-based, and transformative approaches to mediation.
Tara has taught and developed undergraduate and graduate psychology courses covering such topics as socio-cultural approaches to psychology, developmental psychology, personality psychology, group processes, and the psychology of conflict resolution. Tara earned her PhD in Social and Health Psychology from Stony Brook University and her JD from the New York University School of Law.
There are many learnings to be gleaned from this episode for both mediators and non-mediators alike as William and Tara talk through the different styles and approaches that can be taken during the mediation process. Join them as they discuss:

Her journey into coaching and positive psychology began after being left emotionally broken by workplace bullying at the height of her career. In the aftermath of that experience, she went on a path to redefine her own self-worth and what it means to be successful.
After realising that too many women were struggling to find their own voice as they carved out new paths in their lives, she decided to help other women stand up, speak out and be heard in the workplace. This led to her becoming the founder and leader of “Surviving Corporate!” A programme for women of color, recovering from workplace trauma.

Smadar Cohen-Chen joins host William Corless in this episode to discuss negotiation through the female lens. Smadar is currently a senior lecturer in the management department, in the Sussex Business School at University of Sussex.
She received her PhD in social psychology from the University of Sheffield in 2014 and then spent two years as a visiting Assistant Professor in The Kellogg School of Management, North Western University.
Her research focuses on the role of emotions and emotional expression and regulation in interpersonal and social processes. This includes conflict, conflict resolution, decision-making, and negotiations.
She's been teaching negotiations for seven years for MBA students, executive postgraduate and undergraduates and she has also conducted workshops on cross cultural negotiation, specifically negotiation for women.

A lecturer in the management discipline for over 20 years, Dr. Deirdre Curran joins host William Corless in this episode to discuss the role of an apology in mediation. Together with her colleague Alec Coakley, Deirdre has recently published on this topic with the Journal of Mediation & Applied Conflict Analysis.
Deirdre is actively involved in researching the lived experience of hospitality workers in Ireland with a view to highlighting issues and promoting positive change. She also maintains a scholarly interest in workplace mediation as a dispute resolution process. She leads a national level workplace mediation research group, housed within the Kennedy Institute of Conflict Intervention at Maynooth University. She also represents the College of Business, Public Policy and Law as a steering committee member of the University of Sanctuary initiative, aimed at making NUIG a welcoming place for refugees, asylum seekers and members of the Travelling Community.
